Hearing Aids and Medicare

Congress barred Medicare coverage of hearing aids 50 years ago because “people thought hearing loss was just a normal part of aging,” said Dr. Cassel, one of the authors of a recent JAMA editorial on hearing health policies. “They didn’t see it as a disability or a medical problem.” – according to the New York Times.

A New York Times article explains why hearing aids are so expensive and how they could be less so.

I am often asked by clients about hearing aids and Medicare coverage. I have to tell them that Medicare doesn’t think hearing, eye glasses, and dental care are important to their health.
