Medicare Help in 2017

The income requirements for getting Medicare help in 2017 have been announced by CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid).

People in Arizona can use an online application at www.healthearizonaplus.gov

To get Medicare help in 2017, people must have income below certain levels.

QUALIFIED INDIVIDUAL (QI)

  • Individual monthly income limit
  • $1,377
  • Married couple monthly income limit
  • $1,847
  • The state of Arizona will pay a person’s Part B premium.

QUALIFIED MEDICARE BENEFICIARY (QMB)

  • Individual monthly income limit
  • $1,025
  • Married couple monthly income limit
  • $1,374
  • The state of Arizona (AHCCCS) will pay:
    Part A premiums
    Part B premiums
    Deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments

People who qualify for QMB help are assigned a health plan by AHCCCS (Arizona Medicaid – pronounced “access”). That health plan will pay a person’t co-pays for doctor visits, labs, and hospital stays.

People who qualify for QMB help can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan that provides benefits that are not normally covered by Medicare such as, dental, hearing aids, glasses, and even a free gym membership.

Medicare help in 2017 for drug costs

If your monthly income is below $1,528 (for a single person) or $2,050 for a couples, you may be eligible for Extra Help – a federal program that helps you pay for some or most of the costs of prescription drugs. 

If you apply for this “Extra Help” through the Social Security (ssa.gov) website, there are some income limits for getting this help. Here is info on  Extra Help income and asset limit chart.
