The federal agency that manages Medicare said most beneficiaries would see a small increase in their drug-plan premiums in 2010. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said the average monthly premium for stand-alone drug plans in 2010 would be $30 a month. This is a $2 increase from 2009.
Large premium increases that took effect in January 2009 shocked many seniors. Companies like Humana lost many enrollees who were shocked to see their Part D premium nearly double from 2008 to 2009. People with a Part D drug plan can select another plan between November 15 and December 31. If a person enrolls in a new plan, their coverage takes effect on January 1, 2010.
